Double murder in Bremen: Police hunt violent 22-year-old

On Friday afternoon, officers in Vegesack, a district of Bremen, discovered the remains of a 40-year-old man and his wife, five years his junior. Criminal police believe both victims fell victim to a violent crime. A 22-year-old man who lived in the same residential complex is considered the prime suspect. Authorities have launched a public manhunt and strongly advise against approaching or confronting the fugitive.

Eyewitnesses reported to BILD that they heard loud cries for help from the apartment building around 14:00. On the pavement outside lay the husband with severe injuries consistent with stab and cut wounds. First responders attempted in vain to save the man's life. Shortly afterwards, emergency services found his wife dead in the building's basement. The couple's shared child was present inside the flat during the incident; police officers subsequently took the child to a safe place.

The alleged perpetrator shared a flat with his mother in the same house as the murdered couple. In spring, there had already been an incident at this address when residents reported loud banging noises. When officers attempted to question the 22-year-old at that time, he fled through a window and hid in bushes. During his apprehension, he is said to have threatened police officers with an improvised weapon—a knife attached to a pole—whereupon officers deployed a taser.

Following this incident, authorities ordered a psychiatric examination. According to available information, the man was subsequently released. Whether there is a connection between the spring incident and the current killing, investigators initially left open.

The wanted man is approximately 1.80 metres tall and has short brown hair. Police are asking the public for any information about his possible whereabouts, but expressly emphasise that he is to be considered a significant danger to the public.
