A three-month-old baby was found dead in Germany less than 24 hours after being abducted from its pram outside its own home. According to the investigating authorities, the infant was seized by an unknown person whilst it was unsupervised in a pram in front of the apartment. The 37-year-old mother stated that she had left the child outside for only a few minutes whilst she carried shopping up to the flat on the second floor of the residential building.
The mother told the authorities that she had returned from shopping and temporarily left the baby outside whilst she brought the bags upstairs. When she came back down, the child had disappeared.
An extensive search operation was immediately launched in the area, involving police forces, search dogs and drones. The investigation focused on a wider area surrounding the place of abduction.
On Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours after the abduction, the body of a baby was discovered near a stream of the Rankbach river in the region. The authorities are investigating whether this is the missing child, whilst official identification is still underway.
The baby's grandmother told the German newspaper BILD that her daughter had returned from shopping with carrier bags and was just preparing to carry them up to the flat when the incident occurred.
Police are investigating all possibilities, including the scenario that the mother and child may have been followed from nearby shops approximately 15 minutes from their apartment. According to local reports, they had gone shopping shortly before the shops closed at around 22:00, whilst the missing person report was filed at approximately 23:30.
A police spokesman stated that the child had been unsupervised for a short period and an "unknown person had taken it from the pram and carried it away".
