On the night of Thursday, 18 June, a three-month-old boy disappeared from his pram in Renningen in the Böblingen district near Stuttgart. The child's grandmother has now broken her silence and described the circumstances of the disappearance.
A report of the missing infant was filed with police at around 23:30. According to the investigation, the boy disappeared from the pram, which had been left unattended briefly. An extensive search operation immediately commenced, involving around 50 police officers, 40 search dogs, helicopters and drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras. Specialised rescue teams were also deployed.
On Friday at around 13:45, officers reported that they had found the body of an infant. However, police emphasised that further investigations are necessary to establish the child's identity beyond doubt. Following the grim discovery, the search operation was called off. Where exactly the body was found and under what circumstances death occurred were not initially disclosed by investigators. Whether a post-mortem examination will be carried out also remained unclear.
According to police spokesperson Steffen Grabenstein, the boy was alone for only a brief time. Unknown individuals are said to have taken the child from the pram. The grandmother told "Bild" that her daughter had previously been with the baby in a Rewe supermarket, approximately 800 metres from the flat. The store closed at 22:00. After returning to Malmsheimer Straße, the mother left the pram with the child standing briefly on the pavement.
"My daughter came back from shopping, had bags with her and wanted to take them up to the second floor," the grandmother said, according to "Bild". When the mother returned moments later, the pram was empty.
The criminal investigation department in Ludwigsburg is handling the case. It remains unclear whether investigators are proceeding against specific individuals. It was not disclosed whether video footage has been secured or whether witnesses could help clarify the case. On Saturday morning, police emphasised that the identification of the body found is still ongoing. The officers refused to provide further details on grounds of investigative tactics.
