In the Baden-Württemberg city of Renningen, an infant aged just three months has been stolen from his pram and later found dead. The incident has provoked shock across Germany.
The child's mother had returned from shopping and, according to Greek newspaper Τα Νέα (tanea.gr), left the pram with the baby for a few moments outside the entrance to her residential building whilst she carried her shopping bags into her flat. When she returned, the pram was empty – the child had disappeared.
The alerted authorities immediately launched a large-scale search operation. Police officers, firefighters, helicopters, drones and specially trained search dogs combed the area. Local authorities also appealed to the public for information.
However, hope for a happy outcome was quickly dashed. Just a few hours after the abduction, investigators discovered the remains of an infant near the Rankbach, not far from the scene of the crime. German authorities stated that there are strong indications that it is the missing child. The formal identification had not been completed at the time of the report.
Investigations are proceeding at full pace. Officers are evaluating surveillance footage and collecting witness statements from residents. Forensic experts are also working to establish the exact cause of death. So far, there have been no arrests. The circumstances of the crime and the motive of the perpetrator or perpetrators remain unknown.
According to media reports, the child's family is in a state of shock. The grandmother reportedly stated that the mother had been away for only a few minutes – which makes the circumstances of the disappearance appear even more mysterious.
