Officers from Offenburg criminal police searched several shisha bars and so-called cocktail lounges in Kehl on Friday, 26 June. The public prosecutor's office issued the search warrants on the basis of information from members of the public, as reported by L'Alsace (https://www.lalsace.fr/faits-divers-justice/2026/07/02/saisies-de-drogue-et-d-armes-blanches-les-bars-a-chichas-dans-le-viseur-de-la-police-allemande).

During the operations, the masked investigators discovered small quantities of narcotics that appeared to be prepared for sale. The exact substance was not disclosed. They also seized various bladed and pointed weapons. The premises were largely empty at that early time.

The German investigators suspect further offences, including violations of gaming machine regulations and the sale of undeclared shisha tobacco. The border town opposite Strasbourg is considered a popular destination for French visitors, many of whom also frequent numerous gaming establishments there.

According to the municipal administration, permanent closures of such premises are legally difficult to enforce. However, since a federal law change in November 2019, the number of licensed gaming devices in bars has been significantly reduced: from a former 671 to currently 380 in the municipality.
