Proceedings have begun at the Düsseldorf Regional Court against an 18-year-old defendant. The young man is accused of carrying out an attack with a stabbing weapon in Essen before his 18th birthday, in which several people were injured.

According to the prosecution, the then-minor Erjon S. ran towards uniformed officers with a blade drawn. His aim was allegedly to die in combat and be regarded as a religious martyr. Police opened fire on the attacker and stopped him.

By now, the gunshot scars are no longer visible. However, a teacher who is also alleged to have been attacked by the teenager still bears the psychological and physical traces of the assault.

During the ongoing proceedings, prosecutors, victims and investigators will describe the course of events on the day of the act. Particular attention is being paid to the question of how the defendant became radicalised and what role extremist ideology played in the deed.
