State security investigating incidents at citizen festival

State security has opened an investigation against a man following an AfD event on Saturday in Fürstenwalde (Oder-Spree), who according to the East Police Directorate is said to have worn a top bearing the name of the banned neo-Nazi music group Landser. The authority told tagesschau.de on Tuesday that suspicion of the use of unconstitutional symbols is being examined.

On German Unity Day, the AfD invited around 1,500 people to a citizen festival on the Bullenwiese. Thuringian AfD parliamentary group leader Björn Höcke was a guest at the event. Influencer Hannes Kreschel published video footage that is said to document an attack by two people – one attacker is wearing a jacket bearing the inscription "Landser".

Police have since filed three charges for assault. The city's municipal office closed the Bullenwiese on Monday after a suspicion of the application of butyric acid – an odour-intensive carboxylic acid with an irritating effect – is being examined. Investigations into this matter are also underway.
