A brutal attack took place in Essen on Sunday evening in which a 33-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries. According to initial investigation findings, the attack occurred in a basement room of an apartment building on Rellinghauser Straße. An unknown assailant is said to have stabbed the victim there.

Despite suffering several deep lacerations and stab wounds, the Algerian managed to leave the scene. He moved independently several hundred metres to the southern exit of Essen main railway station. There he finally collapsed on a bench, visibly bleeding heavily. Bystanders noticed the man's condition and immediately called the emergency services. Civilian first aiders provided care until emergency responders arrived and took the seriously injured man to a clinic. He was taken into emergency surgery there.
