Fresh attack on Berlin memorial site for CSD victims

Unknown persons have uprooted the memorial tree for the victims of the Islamist attack on Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Berlin. According to WELT, citing Berlin's "Tagesspiegel", a police patrol noticed the damaged maple tree in the early hours of Sunday around 1.30 a.m. whilst passing by.

In addition to the tree, the protective fence and other objects in the surrounding area were damaged or destroyed. According to a police spokesman, the tree had been "pushed out of the ground". Police are investigating on suspicion of joint property damage.

The memorial site had been established just a few weeks after the Islamist attack. A new maple tree had been planted at the location of a previously felled tree. The Mitte district authority had placed a bench in rainbow colours next to it. This had already been severely damaged earlier in the week and has since been removed for repair.

Werner Graf, faction chairman of the Berlin Greens, responded with harsh words to the fresh attack. "I am full of rage and dismay, but also defiant", he said. The queer community would not abandon its fight for freedom: "We will replant this tree. As many times as necessary."

In the Islamist attack on Berlin's CSD, one woman was killed; 31 other people were injured.
