Cyber attack on Berlin: Bundeswehr and infrastructure data appear in dark web

Bundeswehr and infrastructure data leaked after Berlin hack

According to Tagesschau, hackers have attacked Berlin's state network and published a comprehensive data package on the dark web. According to media reports, it contains highly sensitive information on critical infrastructure and the Bundeswehr — apparently also including documents on the expansion of the chancellery building, as Der Spiegel reports.

The hacker group initially attempted to extort the Berlin state government. When the ultimatum went unanswered, the attackers put the data package online on Friday.

CDU security expert Roderich Kiesewetter describes the incident as a "catastrophe of unforeseeable proportions". He warns that leaked data on national defence could be deliberately used by states such as Russia or by terrorists for attacks or sabotage.

Bündnis 90/Die Grünen parliamentary vice-chair Konstantin von Notz calls the attack a "genuine data super-disaster". Should it turn out that protective measures were deliberately not adhered to, he demands personnel consequences, von Notz told Handelsblatt. Furthermore, he sees co-responsibility on the part of the federal government: despite repeated warnings, it failed to close known security gaps.

A spokesman for the federal government has stated that an intensive review of the affected data systems is being conducted and that ongoing investigations into the cyber attack are being closely monitored.
