Two women were attacked and substantially injured by a young man in Magdeburg on Thursday. The prosecutor's office obtained an arrest warrant on the same day. The suspect is now in a correctional facility.
According to police findings so far, the 20-year-old struck a 26-year-old woman repeatedly in the face and strangled her in the morning in the "Hinter den Holzstrecken" district. Passers-by noticed the attack, intervened and alerted police. The injured woman was subsequently transported by ambulance to a hospital, where she received inpatient care. Officers immediately collected evidence at the scene and identified the suspected perpetrator as a potential danger.
Roughly two hours later, the same man attacked a 21-year-old woman in the Lorenzweg area. He allegedly struck and kicked her also without apparent reason. Here too, bystanders prevented the attacker from continuing and held him until officers arrived. The second victim required medical treatment but was subsequently able to leave the hospital. Police provisionally arrested the suspect.
On Friday afternoon, the Magdeburg prosecutor's office filed a request for remand in custody. A judge at the district court then issued an arrest warrant on suspicion of attempted manslaughter on two counts. The 20-year-old was immediately transferred to a correctional facility.
