A 42-year-old prisoner escaped during a supervised day release from the correctional facility in Celle. The man, who is serving a life sentence for manslaughter and attempted serious sexual assault, was stopped several days later south of Verona.
The prisoner had visited his mother's flat in Peine together with a member of staff from the facility. During a stop in a garage nearby, he started his motorcycle, which was parked there, and accelerated. Investigators assume that he travelled through Bavaria and eventually reached Italy, as DIE ZEIT reports.
There he met his fate in the form of a crash in which he sustained a serious thigh injury. He is now in a hospital and is being guarded by Italian law enforcement. German authorities are working on his swift return.
The political consequences are already evident. Lower Saxony's justice minister, Kathrin Wahlmann, will soon have to comment on the incident. The opposition has called for clarification and requested an extraordinary session of the responsible committee.
The background to the prison sentence dates back to 2010. At that time, the offender stabbed a 23-year-old woman from Peine to death with multiple knife wounds because she refused his sexual advances. The crime shocked the region at the time and caused widespread consternation.
