At 12:03 in Halle, the trams came to a standstill. Church bells rang through the city centre as a minute of silence was held for the victims of the far-right and antisemitic attack of 9 October 2019 – at the exact moment when the first fatal shots were fired at that time. According to mdr.de, commemorative services took place at several locations in the city.
On Thursday evening, around 230 people had gathered at the former doner kebab shop in Halle city centre. It was there that Kevin S. was shot – one of the two people killed in the attack. The heavily-travelled street was closed, and tram services were temporarily halted. Those affected and bereaved spoke.
Jana L. was also remembered. She had been shot outside the synagogue at the time. The women's choir "Missklang", of which she had been a member, sang songs in Ludwig-Wucherer-Straße that she had enjoyed during her lifetime. Choir director Viola Rieck participated as in previous years.
Over the course of the day, flowers and wreaths were laid at the sites of the attack. A commemorative service took place at the synagogue at midday; a central ceremony on the marketplace followed at 5 p.m.
An incident occurred at the commemorative service at the synagogue: newly elected state parliament vice-president Hans-Thomas Tillschneider of the AfD wanted to attend. Jewish students, however, blocked his way. "We will not allow our commemoration to be hijacked," they said.
On 9 October 2019, a far-right extremist had attempted to break into the synagogue on the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. When that failed, he shot two people and injured others. The perpetrator was later sentenced to life imprisonment.
