Investigations are underway against several officers in the Lower Saxony state capital. Five of them have been temporarily suspended from duty. The trigger was an incident in April of this year.
At that time, a man is alleged to have received a ban from the area. According to the public prosecutor's office, two officers on duty brought him down and injured him in the process. Investigators are now clarifying whether the use of force was proportionate or whether it constitutes intentional assault by a public official.
Three further officers are suspected of protecting their colleagues. They face charges of obstruction of justice by a public official. The authority emphasises that this is currently only an initial suspicion. The Hannover precinct announced the suspensions on Monday.
The affected officers worked in a mobile unit that reinforced other police stations during special situations. Information from an internal complaints office had set the investigation in motion.
Two further police officers were transferred to other departments within the precinct. Disciplinary proceedings are also underway against them for various misconduct while on duty.
The head of the precinct, Gwendolin von der Osten, responded with shock. She said the allegations affected the entire authority and undermined public confidence. Should the allegations be proven, they would violate the principles that the police service stands for. However, the presumption of innocence applies until the proceedings are concluded.
