Immunity lifted for SPD MP Ahmetovic – Searches approved

Bundestag gives investigators green light for searches at Ahmetovic

The Bundestag has lifted the immunity of SPD federal MP Adis Ahmetovic and thereby approved judicial searches. This emerges from a Bundestag document available to the German Press Agency, as rp-online.de reports. Further details on the specific allegations against the 33-year-old were not initially disclosed – this is customary in such proceedings.

Ahmetovic is chairman of the SPD in Hanover. According to media reports, the investigation against him is said to concern the tendering of a hospital site in Lehrte near Hanover. This has not been officially confirmed. The Hanover Public Prosecutor's Office initially made no statement when asked whether the lifting of immunity is connected with this case – it justified its reticence on "investigative tactical grounds".

Ahmetovic's lawyer Holger Nitz released a statement referring to investigations in connection with the hospital site in Lehrte. Whether there is a direct connection to the allegations against the MP is not entirely clear from the text. "We assume that the matter will be clarified and the allegation against Mr Ahmetovic will then be quickly and completely dispelled," the statement says.

Three SPD politicians in the sights of Hanover Public Prosecutor's Office

Ahmetovic is not the only SPD politician under investigation by the Hanover Public Prosecutor's Office. Currently, three politicians from the party are in focus with the authority.

On 9 September, the Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed investigations into Steffen Krach, the then SPD leading candidate for Berlin. A day later it named the allegations: initial suspicion of accepting advantages in two cases, and in a further case possible anticompetitive collusion in tendering procedures, in conjunction with breach of business secrets and a confidentiality obligation.

Krach has repeatedly rejected all allegations. As Regional President, he was chairman of the supervisory board of Klinikum Region Hannover and admitted to having had a preferred bidder in the sale of the hospital site in Lehrte. He learned of a donation by the businessman in question of €9,900 to the Berlin SPD at the end of December 2025 on 7 January and ordered the transfer back the following morning. The money was repaid. The contract for the site ultimately went to another applicant; he himself abstained from voting.

On 2 October, the Public Prosecutor's Office also confirmed investigations into Stefan Politze, the then Lower Saxony SPD state parliamentary faction leader. The authority did not comment on the exact allegations. Politze's lawyer established a connection with the allegations against Krach. Politze has since resigned, but has stressed that he is convinced of his innocence.

Finally, the Public Prosecutor's Office most recently also confirmed the investigations into Ahmetovic – and said nothing about the details. With the lifting of his immunity by the Bundestag, investigators can now carry out searches.
