Crime statistics 2025: murders and rapes rise despite falling overall crime
Overall crime in Germany fell by 5.6 per cent in 2025 – yet murders, manslaughter and rapes increased significantly.
Violent crime increases – despite falling overall crime in Germany
Despite falling overall crime, Germany is recording a marked increase in serious violent offences. This emerges from the Police Crime Statistics (PKS) for 2025, which BILD reports on.
The authorities registered approximately 5.5 million criminal offences nationwide in 2025 – 5.6 per cent fewer than in the previous year. At the same time, the number of murder and manslaughter cases increased by 6.5 per cent. The rise was even steeper for rapes and particularly serious sexual assaults: plus 8.5 per cent. Sexual abuse of children also continued to increase.
In total, police recorded 212,335 cases of violent crime. Of these, 28.9 per cent occurred on public streets, paths or squares.
On Saturday, a so-called "Mourning Watch Germany" took place in Frankfurt, at which organisers commemorated victims of serious violence – including people who died "as a result of attacks, acts of terrorism or serious violent crimes in connection with asylum seekers". One of the victims is Marius Dick (22), a student from Trier, who was killed in July 2026 during a knife attack by an Afghan. BILD published his photograph with the consent of his parents.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) presented a graphic during the presentation of the statistics that breaks down suspects by origin. According to this, approximately 43 per cent of suspects are not German citizens. In comparison with German suspects, the number of suspects from Syria and Afghanistan was around ten times higher according to Dobrindt.
Among male juvenile suspects, the statistics show a figure of 3,710 non-German suspects per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 1,070 German suspects – more than three times as many.
