Store detective apprehends change-fraud fraudster at Bielefeld department store
On Saturday, a store detective at a shop on Niederwall in Bielefeld apprehended a con artist. The 39-year-old, known to police, had previously attempted to obtain cash at the till through a classic change fraud.
At around 16:05, the man placed four clothing items at the till and handed the shop assistant 600 euros. After she had put the money in the till, the customer asked for the note back to allegedly count it again. During this process, he unnoticed removed several banknotes from the cashier and put them in his jacket. Instead of the original 600 euros, he only returned 400 euros.
Shortly afterwards, the offender attempted to return the clothing items and demand the full 600 euros back. The store detective, who had observed the incident, intervened and held the man. He then alerted the police.
The arrested man is a 39-year-old Romanian with no fixed address in Germany. There was already a warrant against him. Officers initiated criminal proceedings for fraud and unlawful entry. To secure the proceedings, the man paid a deposit of 600 euros. Due to the existing warrant, he was remanded in custody.
