Six people died from gunshot wounds on Monday at a facility for mothers and children in the Hanseatic city of Stade. Further information about the suspected gunman has now come to light. According to reports by NDR, the 45-year-old man allegedly purchased the weapon used in the attack seven days before the bloodshed on Berlin's Kurfürstendamm. He is said to have paid 4,000 euros for the pistol and 21 rounds of ammunition.
This finding suggests the act was premeditated. The public prosecutor's office is treating the incident as six counts of murder, as the characteristics of treachery and base motives are said to be present. Those killed were three employees of the youth welfare office of the Hannover region and three staff members of the youth welfare facility.
The background appears to be a conflict over the man's three-month-old daughter. The suspect, who holds Turkish citizenship, had an appointment concerning custody rights. According to Der Spiegel, he is said to have shaken the infant, which was confirmed in an examination.
After the shooting, the man attempted to flee in a car with a companion. Officers shot out the tyres and stopped the vehicle. The main suspect is now in custody. The 34-year-old mother of the baby and the companion were released.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) said the act left him speechless. The files had not indicated such a level of threat.
