A 30-year-old German man is suspected of carrying out two knife attacks in Freiburg within days – one of which proved fatal. This is reported by swr.de citing police and the Freiburg public prosecutor's office, which released further investigation details on Wednesday.
The first attack occurred on Sunday afternoon at Schlossbergring near the town centre. A 29-year-old was suddenly severely injured by a man with a knife. According to current findings, the suspect had met him briefly beforehand. A suspect was not initially apprehended in this case.
Two days later, on Tuesday evening around 21:20, a man attacked a 74-year-old in the Rieselfeld district outside a church community centre. A witness alerted the police – when officers arrived, the older man was already dead.
That same evening, police arrested a 30-year-old German national in the area of Berliner-Allee. Police dogs and a helicopter were deployed during the search; witness information led to the suspect. The suspected murder weapon was secured not far from the crime scene in Rieselfeld.
Information about a possible motive or further background circumstances is not yet available. Investigators have found no indications of religious motives according to their own statements. The alleged knife attacker is said not to have attacked any other persons on Tuesday evening.
