Fabian murder trial: Witness reports on defendant's financial troubles and fear of loss

In the murder trial over the death of eight-year-old Fabian, a relative of defendant Gina H. gave incriminating testimony before the Regional Court in Rostock. As reported by DER SPIEGEL (Justice & Crime), the man described how Gina H. sought debt restructuring in early 2025 for financial reasons. Additionally, he said she wanted to take out a five-figure loan and asked him for a guarantee — he agreed. Her grandparents, with whom the woman had most recently lived, are currently paying the ongoing instalments.
The witness said he could not judge whether the defendant was guilty. "I cannot look into anyone's head." He had "no explanation at all" for Fabian's death.
The relative also reported that Gina H. had suffered from fear of loss since her youth. It was difficult for her to let go of people who were close to her. Regarding the defendant's specific treatment of her own son and Fabian, he could provide no precise information.
The witness described the relationship between Gina H. and Fabian's father as "predominantly harmonious", but recalled a situation in which the boy's father allegedly became physically aggressive towards her — that was about two years ago.
As in previous trial days, numerous voice and text messages were read out that documented tensions in the relationship between the defendant and Fabian's father. Even on the day after the body was found, both exchanged voice messages by the minute. The boy's father allegedly said in them: "My son is dead. Life is shit." "You just feel empty, helpless." Gina H. replied: "It's not easy for me either."
According to the charges, the woman is said to have stabbed Fabian in October and subsequently set his corpse on fire. Investigators believe her motive was her relationship with Fabian's father and a temporary separation from him. On Monday, Gina H. testified in court for the first time in the trial and rejected the accusations.
