Second murder trial following football riots
According to mdr.de, the second trial in connection with attacks on police officers during the football match between Magdeburg and Dresden in January has begun at Magdeburg Regional Court. A 31-year-old is accused of throwing a paving stone weighing approximately five kilograms and striking a police officer on the riot helmet.
The public prosecutor alleges that the man at least knowingly accepted the risk that the throw could have caused fatal injuries. The charge is brought under the murder criterion of "base motives". The defendant has been in custody since March and exercised his right to remain silent during the investigation. If convicted, he faces a custodial sentence of up to ten years.
The Regional Court is hearing a similar case in parallel: a man from Aschersleben is accused of throwing a pavement slab at police officers and striking an officer directly on the helmet. In this proceedings, police have submitted extensive video material, and the defendant has admitted to throwing the slab. Attempted murder is also alleged in this case. The two football clubs will meet again in the coming week — Dynamo Dresden will host 1. FC Magdeburg on 18 October.
