Investigators arrested a 53-year-old man from Rwanda in Main-Kinzig district. Innocent S. is suspected of having participated in the destruction of Tutsi in his home country in 1994. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office in Karlsruhe confirmed the arrest.
Investigators see him as an accomplice to genocide as well as murder in 25 cases. At the time, he worked as an assistant to the mayor in Kayove. On five separate days, he is believed to have ordered the murder of a total of 25 Tutsi.
Furthermore, he is suspected of having previously exploited his position to incite the population to the extermination of Tutsi in his commune. He is believed to have had lists drawn up with the names of those to be killed. On one of these occasions, he is said to have personally stabbed someone with a knife.
The arrest was based on an arrest warrant issued by a judge at the Federal Court of Justice on 24 June. Since then, the accused has been held in pre-trial detention. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office is leading the proceedings owing to the extraordinary gravity of the allegations.
In 1994, Rwanda experienced one of the most brutal massacres of the twentieth century. Within approximately 100 days, militias claimed an estimated 800,000 victims, predominantly Tutsi and moderate Hutu.
