A 42-year-old man was shot during a police operation in the western German city of Remscheid on Wednesday evening, authorities said.
According to a joint statement from the Wuppertal public prosecutor's office and Hagen police, the man had previously threatened two girls with pepper spray. He then sprayed the spray in the direction of police officers and fled the scene.
Officers encountered the man again shortly thereafter and attempted to deploy a Taser, but missed. The man then began throwing tools at the police officers, and one of the officers opened fire and hit him.
Despite rescue services' efforts to revive the man, he died at the scene. Hagen police took over the investigation of the incident.
The incident occurs in the context of a trend in which German police shot fewer people during operations in 2025 than in the previous year. According to data from the magazine "Bürgerrechte & Polizei/CILIP", published by the Institute for Civil Rights and Public Safety at Humboldt University Berlin, 17 people were killed in this manner in the past year, compared to 25 people in 2024. However, the number of people shot in these two years significantly exceeds the average of the last ten years.
