A serious incident occurred in Frankfurt city centre on Tuesday afternoon in which police officers shot a man. The incident took place near the city's main railway station.

According to information from the German newspaper Bild, a 35-year-old man attacked a police officer with a sharp object during a police check and slightly injured him in the face. Whereupon further police officers opened fire on the attacker and neutralised him.

The suspect was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital. The German authorities initially provided no further details about the man's identity.

Witnesses reported according to news agency dpa that they heard gunshots around 16:00 local time and then saw a man lying on the ground. The incident took place at Kaisertor, a square opposite Frankfurt's main railway station.

Police regularly conduct checks in this area, aimed at combating drug-trafficking syndicates.
