Charges against Heilbronn policeman for embezzlement
The Mosbach public prosecutor's office has brought charges against a 60-year-old officer from the Heilbronn police headquarters. According to swr.de, the man is alleged to have collected cash from traffic stops from the end of October 2021 onwards at the traffic division Tauberbischofsheim in 153 cases and used it for private purposes.
According to the public prosecutor's office, the policeman is said to have threatened at least one road user with arrest in order to extort a security payment. Such payments are lawful when road users have no fixed place of residence in Germany – they serve to secure potential fines. The total damage to the state is put at €246,415.
Investigators became aware of the embezzlements when discrepancies came to light in a case handled by the officer. The allegations are of breach of trust, extortion and forgery of documents. The Mosbach Regional Court must now decide whether to admit the charges. The Heilbronn police headquarters has in parallel initiated disciplinary proceedings; the man is currently not on duty.
