The trial of a 49-year-old man began on Friday before the Kiel regional court. He is accused of deliberately setting fire to a residential building in the Gaarden district at the end of December. Several residents sustained injuries in the incident.

According to the prosecution, the defendant is alleged to have set fire to bulky waste on the rear courtyard of the building in the late afternoon of 29 December. Investigators suspect the man was dissatisfied with conditions in the building. Shortly afterwards, the flames spread to the external wall and the stairwell.

Emergency services deployed an aerial ladder truck to rescue several people from the burning building. The criminal court is expected to announce its verdict towards the end of August.
