German police have searched the offices of the German Football Association (DFB) and municipal administration buildings in several cities as part of a corruption investigation relating to tickets for the 2024 European Football Championship held in Germany. The investigation focuses on suspicion that numerous municipalities received thousands of Euro 2024 tickets at preferential prices.
Prosecutors in Bochum and the state criminal police office of the western federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia are leading the investigation on suspicion of accepting and granting improper advantages. Herbert Reus of the said authority stressed to German news agency dpa: "A football ticket is not part of a civil servant's salary. Anyone in the public administration who holds out their hand for money will receive our visit."
The DFB declined to comment on the raids, but confirmed searches at the association's headquarters in Frankfurt. However, a spokesman for the federation emphasised that the investigation was not directed against the association itself.
The raids come shortly after the surprising elimination of the German national team in the round of 16 of the ongoing World Cup against Paraguay. Since Germany's fourth World Cup title in 2014 in Brazil, the team has been eliminated after the group stage at the two subsequent World Cups.
