As part of a corruption investigation into tickets for the 2024 European Football Championship, German investigators searched premises of the German Football Association (DFB) and municipal offices in several cities. Police and the DFB announced this, as Sportklub N1 reports.
The investigation is focusing on suspicions that numerous municipalities received thousands of tickets for Euro 2024, held in Germany, under preferential conditions. The public prosecutor's office in Bochum and the state criminal police office of the western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia are leading the investigation on suspicion of accepting and granting improper advantages.
Herbert Reus from the aforementioned state criminal police office emphasised to German news agency dpa: "A football ticket is not part of a civil servant's salary. Anyone in the public administration who holds out their hand for money will experience our visit."
The DFB declined to comment on the raids at its headquarters in Frankfurt, but confirmed the searches. A spokesman for the association pointed out that the investigation is not directed against the DFB itself.
The allegations cast light on the allocation practices of major events and possible influence on municipal decision-makers.
