A 40-year-old Romanian woman died on Monday morning in a knife attack on a farm in Kaldenkirchen. Her 44-year-old partner was seriously injured in the incident. The incident took place in accommodation for seasonal workers, before work began.
The incident occurred in Kaldenkirchen, a district of Nettetal in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, according to Adevarul. The woman worked as a harvest helper on a farm where asparagus and strawberries are grown.
According to German authorities, three Romanian nationals were involved in the conflict: the deceased woman, her partner and another seasonal worker aged 25.
Police were alerted at around 7:22 a.m. Emergency personnel, ambulances and a rescue helicopter were dispatched to the farm. The woman had multiple stab and cut wounds. Despite emergency medical care and air transport to a clinic, she died shortly after admission.
The deceased woman's partner suffered serious injuries and underwent surgery. His condition is being monitored by doctors.
Investigators are treating the 25-year-old countryman as the principal suspect. He was arrested immediately after the incident and is in police custody. Officers secured a knife at the crime scene. German newspaper Bild reports that this may have been used as the murder weapon. Experts are to determine whether the object was used in the attack.
Police and the public prosecutor's office have launched a murder investigation. A special investigation team has been formed. Several seasonal workers were interviewed to clarify the circumstances of the incident.
The motive for the dispute remains unclear. Authorities are examining whether the conflict was related to work on the farm or whether personal reasons played a role.
The case is reminiscent of a previous incident in Nettetal: in March, two seasonal workers became involved in a serious dispute. A 26-year-old is alleged to have attempted to kill her 33-year-old colleague. The injured woman survived at that time in critical condition.
