Police search power plant grounds in Weisweiler on suspicion of sabotage

On Friday, police conducted a major operation around the Weisweiler brown coal power station in Aachen district. According to Google News LU DE citing WDR, officers searched the plant grounds and surrounding area for suspicious objects after concrete suspicion of sabotage emerged.

Several police vehicles and a drone were deployed. A WDR reporter confirmed the presence of emergency services on site. The criminal forensics unit focused on several locations in a field and in bushes in immediate proximity to the power station as well as at an RWE energy company switching station.

Officers secured numerous thin wires in the process. Whether these are connected to the sabotage attempts remained unclear initially. Investigations are ongoing.

Cologne police confirmed to WDR that a letter claiming responsibility existed. This is believed to have been sent by a man from Gevelsberg, who is currently being sought. Near Niederzier in Düren district, a special operations unit (SEK) deployed to a lorry – however, the sought suspect was not found there. Subsequently, police searched the immediate surroundings at Hambach opencast mine with sniffer dogs. On Friday evening, the state criminal investigation office secured further evidence.

Already on Thursday evening, investigators had made a discovery at the switching station in Dormagen-Gohr in Rhein-Kreis-Neuss district. There, a walker had found a suspicious object and alerted police. According to information from tageszeitung, Dormagen was mentioned in a letter claiming responsibility for incidents in Brandenburg as a possible target – as was the Weisweiler power station.
