Police came upon the body of an infant on Friday afternoon in the southern German town of Renningen. Officers were searching at that time for a three-month-old boy who had already been abducted from a pram on Thursday evening. This was reported by the Bild newspaper.
The parents reported their child's disappearance to the authorities at around 23:30 on Thursday. According to police information, the infant had been left unattended in the pram for a short time when an unknown person removed the baby and took him with them.
According to a family member, the 37-year-old mother had gone shopping with her son towards evening. On the way home, she took a short walk. When she arrived home, she carried the shopping bags into her flat on the second floor. She left the pram outside the house. When she returned a few minutes later, the child had disappeared.
Following the report, police launched a large-scale search operation. Officers combed through the town and surrounding area throughout the night and on Friday. They deployed a helicopter, drones and approximately forty search dogs. The Red Cross, fire brigade, water rescue service and technical rescue personnel also took part in the operation.
In the course of the search, investigators discovered the body of an infant on Friday afternoon. The body lay at the Rankbach, a stream running through the town, possibly also in the water. The authorities could not initially confirm whether it was the missing boy. Identification was still underway at the time of the report.
