Six people lost their lives in a shooting at a youth welfare centre in the city of Stade, located west of Hamburg. The attack took place around midday; among the victims were exclusively adult persons – employees of the facility.
According to police chief Kathrin Schuol from Lüneburg, the main motive is most likely a conflict related to custody rights. Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens described the act as "cold-blooded".
Five victims died at the scene, while a sixth person later died from their injuries in hospital. In addition to the fatalities, several people were injured, including some severely.
Police arrested the suspected perpetrator, a 45-year-old German national of Turkish descent, as well as two women. Following the attack, forensic technicians in white protective suits secured evidence at the scene, which was cordoned off with police tape.
