Six people were shot on Monday at a shelter for women and children in Stade, northern Germany. The alleged perpetrator, a 45-year-old man, was arrested the same day. New findings suggest that the man may have severely abused his own baby as early as April, according to BFM TV, citing German media outlets Der Spiegel and Die Welt.
The man, a Turkish national born in Germany, had an appointment at the facility on Monday to negotiate custody of his three-month-old daughter. The child was present at the premises with her mother. After the bloodshed, the suspect was apprehended in a car driven by a 65-year-old woman who, according to investigators, maintains "a close connection" to the family.
Police had previously had the 45-year-old in their sights for making threats, but had not classified him as violent. He is said to have threatened doctors at the hospital where his infant was being treated and threatened them with responsibility for any harm to the child. The Hannover public prosecutor's office confirmed to Die Welt that this threat investigation had been dropped because the statements did not appear to be criminally relevant.
Now Der Spiegel and Die Welt are reporting in agreement that the man allegedly shook his infant in April. The child subsequently required hospital treatment. Lüneburg police announced on Tuesday that a special task force has been set up to investigate the crime. Officers are reviewing video footage and examining clues that citizens have submitted via a dedicated online portal. On Tuesday evening, a requiem mass was held in a church in Stade for the victims.
