Shooting in Stade: Six dead in mother-and-child facility
A shooting took place in the town of Stade in the German state of Lower Saxony, west of Hamburg, in which six people were killed. The first shots were fired at around 12:15 p.m. on Dankersstraße, in a facility that provides temporary accommodation for young mothers and their children.
According to police confirmation, five people died at the scene, and a sixth person later succumbed to their injuries in hospital. All victims were adults. Among those killed were four women and one man, according to Večernji list.
Police arrested three people. In addition to the main suspect, two other people were subjected to "police measures". The alleged gunman was arrested at the edge of the city.
A witness told media that he heard loud screams coming from the building around midday, followed shortly by gunshots. He saw a woman with a young man in a car that attempted to flee the scene. Police officers called out "Stop!", but the vehicle continued. Several officers then opened fire and discharged at least 10 to 15 shots.
Lower Saxony's Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) and Kathrin Schuol from the Lüneburg Police Directorate held a press conference. According to initial investigation results, there is no connection to a clan-related crime offence.
Police warned the public against false reports and rumours on social networks and appealed to the population not to spread unverified information. The motive for the incident is currently unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
