Investigation following fatal shooting

Following the deaths of two employees of the district office during a weapons inspection in Berngau, investigators have released details about the gunman. As DER SPIEGEL (Justice & Crime) reports, the 60-year-old was a police trainee in Bavaria in 1988 but was discharged before completing his training. The police made no statement regarding the reasons.

The man is said to have shot a 45-year-old employee of the district office and his 54-year-old colleague on Thursday. The two had travelled to his home for a routine and unannounced weapons inspection. As a sport shooter and hunter, the 60-year-old legally owned ten registered firearms.

Around 2 p.m., residents heard gunshots and called emergency services. The gunman also contacted the emergency centre himself, admitted to firing shots, and stated that he was armed and would not surrender without resistance. After a standoff lasting several hours, police special forces arrested the 60-year-old at approximately 2.20 a.m. Shots were fired during the arrest, injuring the man.

The suspect was taken under police guard to a hospital, where he remained as of Saturday. Following his medical treatment, he is to be brought before an investigating judge. This judge would then decide on remand in custody or admission to a specialist clinic.
