In a shooting in Stade, Lower Saxony, six people lost their lives on Monday. Five victims died at the scene, and a sixth person succumbed to her injuries later in hospital. A further person was wounded, and her condition is stable.
The suspected perpetrator is a 45-year-old man who lives in Hannover. He had an appointment at a mother-and-child facility to discuss custody of his three-month-old daughter. The baby was in the facility together with its mother.
According to Kathrin Schuol, head of Lüneburg police headquarters, the man shot four women and two men. All victims were staff members of a youth welfare service. The mother and child remained unharmed.
Police received multiple emergency calls. When emergency services arrived, they found that four people had been shot "in a particularly brutal manner". A fifth person died during resuscitation, and the sixth died later in hospital.
The shooter is a Turkish-born German. He was already known to police for making threats, but was not considered to be violent. He did not possess a firearms licence. The baby's mother told police that she no longer lived with him.
Police stated that there was no further danger to the public. A man was arrested.
