A 45-year-old man opened fire at a youth centre in Stade on Friday, killing six people. The victims included four women and two men, all of whom were staff members of the facility. Several other people suffered injuries.
The incident took place on Dankersstraße in the Lower Saxony city. The suspected perpetrator, a man born in Germany, was arrested by police. A second person was also taken into custody, although this person was apparently not directly involved in the shooting.
According to investigators' findings, a dispute over child custody may have been the motive behind the act. The 45-year-old was supposed to appear at a hearing that day regarding custody of his three-month-old daughter. Both the mother of the child and the infant were in the building during the incident but remained unharmed.
The suspect had previously come to the attention of police but was not considered particularly violent until now. Whether he was in legal possession of the weapon remained unclear initially – he did not have the appropriate permit.
Stade is located west of Hamburg and has approximately 50,000 inhabitants.
