A killing in the Lower Saxony city of Stade resulted in six deaths. Among those murdered are three employees of the youth welfare office from the Hanover region as well as three further persons employed in youth welfare by the Hanseatic city. The responsible public prosecutor's office is treating the incident as a sixfold murder, as characteristics such as treachery and base motives are apparent.
Investigators suspect a family conflict over custody as the trigger. The arrested chief suspect, a 45-year-old with a Turkish passport, is said to have attended an appointment on that day regarding parental responsibility for his infant daughter, who is a few months old. A 34-year-old woman, the mother of the child, as well as another female companion of the man, were released from custody. No application for investigative detention was made against either woman.
On the evening after the killing, relatives, colleagues and firefighters gathered in St. Wilhadi Church in Stade for a service in memory of the victims. A further memorial service for the three slain youth welfare employees was announced for the following Wednesday in Hanover. Prayers, spoken texts and music were to be used there to express solidarity with those bereaved and all employees of the youth welfare offices.
