A 45-year-old man who allegedly shot six people in Stade, Lower Saxony, is now being linked to a serious criminal background in Turkey.

A 45-year-old man who is suspected of killing six people on Monday in a youth support centre in Stade, Lower Saxony, is at the centre of new revelations about his criminal past. According to information published by the German tabloid Bild citing documents from the Turkish judicial information system UYAP, the suspect is said to have been subject to several criminal proceedings in Turkey.
According to these documents, the man is suspected, among other things, of sexually abusing his own daughter. The alleged offence is said to have been committed on 9 June 2022 in Gaziantep; the proceedings were reportedly assigned to Criminal Court No. 2 in Kahramanmaraş. A further proceeding is said to relate to a serious sexual offence from May 2007 in Kahramanmaraş province.
Between the two alleged offences, the man is said to have been in pre-trial detention and subsequently escaped from prison. Since then, he has been considered a fugitive in Turkey. A step-brother of the suspect told Bild that he had not been in contact with him since the escape.
The public prosecutor's office in Stade has not yet officially confirmed the information from Turkey. It is also unclear whether German authorities were aware of the man's Turkish criminal background. In Germany, he was not known to police for violent offences, though there were reportedly complaints about aggressive behaviour towards doctors and government officials.
The attack in Stade took place in a youth support centre. The suspect is said to have opened fire on staff at the facility. Four women and two men were killed. According to initial investigative findings, the attack was linked to a custody dispute. The man's child had been awarded to the mother after suffering shaken baby syndrome, which the suspect allegedly caused. The man is in pre-trial detention and must answer for the six deaths.
