In Halle (Saale), Chief Public Prosecutor Dennis Cernota released several teenagers aged 13 to 16 who are suspected of abusing four girls under 14 years old. The 13-year-old was not arrested at all; the others were released by police with the notification that they would not be charged. Cernota stated: "I see no evidence of rape. The girls were there voluntarily."

This decision was met with incomprehension by residents of Genfer Straße. A witness using the pseudonym Jokel, whose real name is known to Focus magazine, reported horrific scenes. "The girls were locked in and beaten. That does not look voluntary. And I know what I saw," he said.

Initially, Jokel heard noise coming from an apartment on one of the upper floors. Later he heard a scream: "She could become pregnant!" Another resident, Jennifer Schmidt, told the Bild newspaper she had heard another cry for help: "I must not become pregnant!"

Schmidt returned from a party on Saturday evening and simply wanted to get her jacket. In doing so, she saw one of the girls running down the stairs. "She was naked except for a short top and was calling the police on her mobile phone," said the 20-year-old. She then found an unconscious girl lying on the floor in the open apartment. She threw the boys out and tried to help.

Jokel also witnessed the scene and tried to grab one of the suspects, but he escaped. It was the oldest of the group. He ran out of the apartment half-naked with his trousers open, followed by the others. "Four boys come towards you on the narrow stairs," Jokel described the situation. For self-protection, he did not intervene more forcefully. "The oldest just grinned," he added.

During their attempted escape, the teenagers stole a neighbour's e-scooter and damaged a parked car. On Monday evening, a scratch was still visible on the door of a blue Dacia. However, they did not get far with the scooter.

Jokel will not forget the scenes. "One of the girls was beaten with many bruises. But at least she could walk," he said. Two other girls were taken to hospital unconscious. Three empty vodka bottles are said to have been in the apartment.
