German prosecutors have brought charges against a Ukrainian soldier in his 50s. He is suspected of leading the attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022.

German investigators have brought charges against a Ukrainian soldier suspected of leading the attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in September 2022. It is the first charges filed in this case.
The man is in his 50s and is regarded by the newspaper Die Zeit as the "mastermind of the attack". He is suspected of commanding a seven-member crew that detonated the pipelines in the Baltic Sea. At the time of the attack, he was an active soldier in the Ukrainian army and is said to have previously worked for the Ukrainian intelligence service SBU.
The prosecution is investigating on suspicion of joint property damage by explosion and importing explosives. The charges mark a turning point in investigations that have been ongoing for more than two years.
