A young military police officer of the US armed forces who fatally injured a 33-year-old woman near Ansbach in January last year will not be tried before a military court. The 21-year-old has agreed to a settlement with prosecutors that provides for his discharge from military service.
The incident occurred in the early morning of 12 January 2025 on Federal Road 14 near Urlas Barracks. The then 19-year-old soldier was driving his patrol vehicle when he lost control and struck the pedestrian from behind. The woman was married and had four children.
German investigators concluded that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. He had begun his shift the evening before at approximately 21:30. The case was later transferred to US military justice.
Originally the soldier was scheduled to appear before a military court in Katterbach in May. He was charged with negligent homicide. At a hearing on 17 February, he pleaded not guilty. The charges were dropped last week after an application for administrative discharge was approved.
According to a spokeswoman for the Office of Special Trial Counsel, the man will be discharged from the Army with a dishonorable discharge and demoted to the rank of private. The family of the deceased woman supported the application. In addition to his discharge, financial penalties were imposed.
The soldier is from Holbrook in the US state of New York and will return to the United States shortly.
A fundraising campaign for the family of the deceased had raised over 115,000 dollars.
