Detention in San Francisco de Macorís over alleged plot against president
The Dominican Republic's Public Ministry arrested on Tuesday Delvinson de la Cruz Sosa, 29, who is being investigated for the alleged planning of an attack against president Luis Abinader, according to infobae.com citing the EFE agency and local media. The operation was carried out through a raid on the apartment where the detainee resides, in the Vista del Valle sector of San Francisco de Macorís, Duarte province, in the north-east of the country.
The investigation was initiated following alerts from intelligence agencies regarding alleged threats against the head of state. The judicial order links de la Cruz Sosa with a possible attack at the National Congress headquarters in Santo Domingo during events marking Constitution Day, scheduled for Friday, 6 November 2026.
Judge Josefina Díaz Marte of the Judicial Office for Permanent Service of the Judicial District of San Francisco de Macorís authorised the raids at the request of prosecutors Benedicto Arquímedes Reynoso Sánchez, Pedro Williams Concepción and Elington Santiago Villar. The judicial document specifically refers to the "planning of an alleged terrorist attack" against Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona.
During the operations, agents and prosecutors seized electronic devices and chemical substances. The Public Ministry indicated that these items will be submitted for evaluation as part of the investigation. The authorities also searched Ferretería Molina, located on Avenida Profesor Juan Bosch in the same sector, which was the arrestee's place of work according to information released by the General Procuracy of the Republic.
The request presented to the courts included the search for mobile phones, tablets, computers, firearms, military equipment and explosives. The Computer Crime Investigation Division of the National Intelligence Directorate (DNI) is participating in the proceedings.
So far, the Public Ministry has not reported whether the seized material confirms the existence of an immediate threat against Abinader. The authorities also did not specify what motives were attributed to the person under investigation or whether other individuals are under suspicion. The inquiry aims to determine the scope of the threats and establish whether there was a concrete plan to carry out the alleged attack.
The Dominican president is in Spain, where he is scheduled to participate on Wednesday and Thursday in the XXX Ibero-American Summit. His return to the Dominican Republic is scheduled for Friday, the same date on which Constitution Day is commemorated.
Although the judicial order places the alleged attack at the National Congress, traditional celebrations for that date usually take place in San Cristóbal province, where the first Dominican constitution was signed on 6 November 1844.
