Gang of robbers arrested after chase in north of Guayaquil; one dead
Police captured four members of a gang that robbed a foreign citizen in Los Ceibos. One of the criminals died following an exchange of gunfire in La Atarazana.
Police operation in Guayaquil leaves one criminal killed and four arrested
According to primicias.ec, a police operation carried out in northern Guayaquil on Saturday, 12 September 2026 resulted in the detention of four suspected robbers and the death of one of them, after the gang robbed a foreign citizen in the Los Ceibos sector.
The robbery took place around 09:00. The victim, a foreign citizen, was wounded by the criminals, although the commander of the Police Zone 8, Walter Villarroel, clarified in the afternoon that the gunshot did not cause him serious injury.
30-minute chase across northern city
Upon noticing police presence, the robbers fled in a red vehicle. Officers from the Police and the Municipal Public Safety Company (Empresa Pública Municipal Segura E.P.) immediately launched a pursuit. "It was possible to establish code 3, close off the perimeters and establish the direction taken by the criminals," explained Commander Villarroel.
The flight crossed several sectors in northern Guayaquil, including the La Garzota residential area. Passengers on public buses and other citizens captured the operation on video and reported gunfire and traffic disruptions on several streets.
After 30 minutes of pursuit, the criminals were intercepted in the La Atarazana sector, where an exchange of gunfire occurred. Two members of the gang were wounded and transported to a health centre; one of them died from the injuries sustained.
Arrests made, firearm and vehicle seized
The four individuals were immobilised, handcuffed and placed face down until the arrival of prosecutors to begin judicial proceedings. Police also seized a firearm and retained the vehicle used by the gang.
Among those arrested is a minor. The criminal killed was 28 years old and had a criminal record for robbery. Another of those captured, 22 years old, also had a record for robbery and illegal possession of weapons.
