Fourth prisoner recaptured following escape from CRS Bellavista in Santo Domingo
The National Police recaptured on Friday 30 October Damián J., one of the six inmates who escaped from the Social Rehabilitation Centre (CRS) Bellavista, in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, according to elcomercio.com. The operation was carried out at approximately 13:30 in the rural parish of Puerto Limón, as a result of intelligence and investigation work.
With this detention, four of the six fugitives have been returned to police custody. Two remain at large.
Colonel Alex Silva, police commander in Santo Domingo, noted that a citizen alert contributed to locating the inmate in that rural sector of the province. The institution did not detail the specific circumstances of Damián J.'s presence in Puerto Limón or the exact location of his capture.
The escape occurred on 12 October 2026 in the maximum security area of the penitentiary. The six inmates opened a hole in the wall of a cell on the second floor, which connected with a pipe duct and the rear of the pavilion, a route through which they managed to leave the facility.
Two days after the escape, the Police recaptured the first two fugitives. The detention on Friday brought to four the total number of prisoners recovered, almost three weeks after the breakout.
The Interior Minister, John Reimberg, announced that the recaptured inmates will be transferred to the maximum security prison El Encuentro. The measure forms part of the Government actions adopted following the Bellavista escape. Authorities continue searching for the two inmates who remain unlocated.
