According to expreso.ec, a sergeant of the National Police was shot in the head on Friday, 11 September during a pursuit in the sector of the Sergio Toral cooperative, in Monte Sinaí, north-west of Guayaquil. The officer remains in critical condition.
The uniformed officers were responding to a distress call when they detected a suspicious motorcycle with two occupants in the Nueva Prosperina district. Upon attempting to follow it, a pursuit was initiated. The motorcycle driver's passenger drew a firearm and opened fire on the police patrol; one of the projectiles pierced the windscreen and struck the sergeant in the head.
The officer was rushed to a medical centre, where the commander of Zone 8, Walter Villarroel, arrived with a security detail. The institution confirmed that the uniformed officer remains in critical condition.
Following the attack, the National Police deployed an operation in Nueva Prosperina that included helicopter overflights, raids and searches in homes and elevated sectors of the zone, with the objective of locating those responsible.
Hours after the incident, the Rewards Plan 131 released a photograph of the presumed attackers and requested citizen collaboration to identify and capture them. The authorities established three reporting channels: the 131 line, the WhatsApp number +593 96 222 2131, and the email [email protected], guaranteeing the confidentiality of those who provide information.
The attack occurred in the Nueva Prosperina district, considered one of the sectors with the highest rates of violence in Guayaquil due to the presence of criminal organisations and territorial disputes between criminal groups.
