Suspect in contract killing of clinic director in Marbella in custody
Following the fatal attack on a cosmetic surgeon in the Spanish resort town of Marbella, police have arrested a suspect. According to the Kleine Zeitung, Spanish media reports identify the suspect as an 18-year-old Swede. A police spokesman confirmed the arrest but made no further statements – the investigating judge had imposed a news blackout.
The attack occurred on Wednesday at around 18:00. A masked individual entered the clinic, went directly to the doctor and shot him multiple times in the head. Emergency medical staff were unable to help the 57-year-old victim; he died at the scene. The perpetrator subsequently fled on a motorcycle.
Spanish media, citing informed sources, reported that the suspect had entered Spain only shortly before the attack, had supporters on the ground and intended to leave the country immediately after the murder. According to the newspaper "El Mundo", he made a "small mistake", which led to his swift arrest on Thursday. The nature of this error was not revealed.
Investigators believe the killing was a contract murder. The focus of the investigation is determining who may have ordered the attack. It cannot be ruled out that a dissatisfied client of the clinic is behind the attack. In addition, police are searching for individuals who may have assisted the arrested man in preparing and carrying out the murder.
The victim had founded his cosmetic and aesthetic surgery clinic in Marbella in 2018. He was originally from Cologne, had studied medicine in Germany and Austria and had worked as a doctor in Aachen. He completed further training in the United Kingdom and South Africa. Previously, he had worked at hospitals in Málaga and Marbella for around ten years. According to some regional media, he also held a German passport; the authorities made no statement on this.
Treatments at his clinic are considered expensive. According to reports, his clients came predominantly from Europe, the Middle East and the USA; for affluent patients, the clinic provides its own recovery villas with individual aftercare. The association of doctors in Málaga paid respects to the deceased with a minute's silence, as it announced on the platform X.
