Life-sentence prisoner struck with glass-fitted coffee pot – sentence for aggravated assault

According to Ilta-Sanomat, a bloody attack took place at Riihimäki prison on Sunday morning, 22 June 2025, shortly after eight o'clock. Perttu Oskari Pyynönen, 28, who is serving a life sentence for murder in Vantaa, attacked another prisoner in the corridor with a striking weapon he had constructed himself.

The victim was going to fetch breakfast and walked past Pyynönen's cell towards his own cell. Pyynönen opened his cell door, followed the man, and struck him from behind on the neck.

Weapon assembled from coffee pot

Pyynönen had attached a glass fragment detached from a coffee pot to an exercise wheel. The victim fell to the ground, but the attack did not end there – according to the court, Pyynönen struck the victim a total of six times. Other prisoners watched the situation from a few metres away. Officers ended the situation by ordering Pyynönen to the ground. The victim suffered bleeding wounds and was taken to hospital care. The incident was recorded by the prison's surveillance cameras.

Prosecutor sought murder attempt, court deemed act less serious

The Kanta-Häme District Court sentenced Pyynönen to two years and four months of unconditional imprisonment for aggravated assault. The prosecutor had sought a sentence for attempted murder, but the court considered the act to be a less serious crime. The sentence, handed down on Tuesday, is not yet final.

Pyynönen was ordered to pay the victim €9,600 in compensation for pain, suffering, and cosmetic injury.

Notes concerning killing found in cell

The actual motive for the act remained unclear. Based on notes found in Pyynönen's cell, he had thoughts related to killing and bitterness regarding "snitching" connected to his previous crime. According to the court, Pyynönen was highly agitated and defiant at the time of the act.

Serious history of violence

Pyynönen has a long and serious history of violent crime. Authorities have assessed him as extremely dangerous. He is serving a life sentence for a torture-style murder and aggravated rape that occurred at Vantaa prison in January 2022. The victim, a man in his early twenties who was a sex offender, was tortured and humiliated for a couple of days by Pyynönen and his criminal associate Abshir Diini Muye. In 2020, Pyynönen had additionally attempted to murder a former classmate from secondary school as a consequence of a relationship dispute.
