Kokkkola shooting murder: unaccountable neighbour ordered to pay €45,000

Kokkola shooting murder: neighbour shot in back with shotgun
Ostrobothnia District Court has convicted a man in his sixties of murder in Kokkola. According to Iltalehti, the act took place on 2 April 2025, when the man saw his neighbour walking on the residential street, retrieved his shotgun from his flat and shot the woman from approximately 20 metres away in the back.
The man stepped to within a couple of metres of the defenceless woman lying on the ground and fired again. The second shot struck her in the side. The 60-year-old victim managed to call the emergency centre and remained conscious for approximately 20 minutes after the first shot. She died from her injuries at hospital the same day.
The neighbours had previously had disagreements, and the man felt he had been bullied. He stated that at the time of the act, "old grudges exploded in his head". The man admitted to firing at the woman but denied being guilty of murder.
The district court sided with the prosecution and assessed that the man had acted with determination and displayed "definite intention to kill". The court found that the act had been committed in an especially cruel and savage manner, and shooting in a residential area had also caused serious general danger.
The man was found to lack criminal responsibility, so he was not sentenced to imprisonment. He was, however, ordered to pay damages: the victim's long-term partner is to receive €15,000 for suffering and approximately €30,000 for funeral and legal costs. The weapon, a Beretta shotgun, was ordered forfeited to the state.
The judgment was issued on 4 June and is not yet final.
