Racially motivated attack in Trappes: CCTV footage of service station shooting
According to BFMTV, authenticated surveillance footage shows how the attack at the Trappes service station unfolded on 23 October. The shooter, Kévin T., 39, wounded two people there before continuing his deadly spree in the neighbouring Verrière district.
In the footage, two women pass through the automatic doors of the establishment at around 10 a.m. A man on an electric scooter follows them a few seconds later. A shot rings out and hits the window; the man on the scooter falls, apparently wounded, and shouts without getting up. Kévin T. then arrives armed with a submachine gun and remains in front of the door for around twenty seconds. He manipulates his weapon, picks something up from the ground, then leaves with a cold and stoic expression.
The attack killed a 26-year-old man, Pengo Bossio Wangi, of Congolese origin. Five other people were wounded, notably a 12-year-old child struck by eight bullet impacts. Two of the wounded were hit at the service station; the other three in Verrière, where the shooter went after his first stop.
Kévin T. suffers from schizophrenia, according to a source close to the investigation cited by BFMTV. His custody was suspended for psychiatric reasons on Sunday morning. The national counter-terrorism prosecutor ordered his transfer to the psychiatric infirmary of the Paris police prefecture for an observation period that could last 48 hours.
Yassine Bouzrou, lawyer for the victim's family, described this suspension as "surprising", claiming that such cases are "very rare" in practice. He denounced a "worrying recurrence": according to him, when the perpetrator of an attack is linked to the far-right, "the psychiatric question arises very quickly". The lawyer called for "symmetry" in expert assessments and timescales, regardless of the suspect's ideological profile.
Four members of the suspect's family and social circle remain in custody. Toxicological analysis revealed the presence of cannabis and cocaine in Kévin T.'s blood.
A search of the perpetrator's home uncovered concerning evidence. His flat in Plaisir was booby-trapped with gas bottles. A copy of Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf" was found, alongside a Bible and a Qur'an. His criminal record shows four previous convictions. In his vehicle, a Renault Clio, investigators found a Sten-type submachine gun and a tear gas canister.
The investigation is being pursued for murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. The offences are classified according to true or assumed membership of a purported race, ethnicity, nation or religion.
